Meet our Chinese Teacher, Morgen!

Morgen graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts in Chinese and a minor in Asian Studies. After graduating, she went on to complete linguistics coursework at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia and served for fifteen years as an intelligence officer specializing in national security operations.
She studied at UT Austin under Dr. Jeannette Faurot, who established one of only four Chinese linguistic folklore programs in the nation, and through this program of study developed a lifetime love of Chinese Tang and Song Dynasty poetry. Morgen specializes in translation of Classical Chinese texts, with a focus on linguistic analysis of classical grammar patterns. She has experience rendering complex Chinese grammar and vocabulary into clear, digestible curriculum for non-native learners and particularly enjoys augmenting established curriculum with lively, idiomatic vernacular Chinese.
Since leaving government service, Morgen has focused on translating her favorite Chinese poets, including Li Bai, Bai Juyi, and Li Yu, and compiling them into an anthology of her own. She taught her own daughter Chinese and has experience teaching both children and adults. She believes that exposure to the unique linguistic, grammatical, and stylistic components of Chinese will enhance any learners’ direct access to China’s beautiful cultural heritage, improve memory and problem-solving skills, and enhance cognitive flexibility.
Meet our Chinese Teacher, Michelle!

Michelle was born in Beijing and moved to the U.S. when she was 3, but has kept her Chinese roots strong by going back to China every summer. Mandarin is her first language, and she describes it as a huge part of who she is.
In 2012, she spent time teaching English at a college prep academy in Beijing, helping middle and high school students prepare for studying abroad. That experience showed her how rewarding it is to share not only language, but also culture and confidence ,with students. She later graduated from UT Austin with a Bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems in 2016.
By day, Michelle works as a product manager in tech, but her passion for language learning has never wavered. She loves introducing others to Chinese language and culture, and as a lifelong learner herself (she’s studied French and Korean), she understands both the challenges and joys of learning a new language. Outside of teaching, you can find Michelle curled up with a book, trying out new recipes in the kitchen, or at a Pilates class.
